Statement from Bremerton Housing Authority RE: City of Bremerton Camping Ordinance Discussions

Bremerton Housing Authority is closely following the redevelopment of the camping ordinance being discussed by the City of Bremerton. During the Bremerton City Council meeting on September 6, 2023, a map was distributed with the latest draft ordinance to suggest where camping might be allowed at all times. The map suggested that camping might be allowed near Bremerton Housing Authority property as well as other identified parcels. Since a decision was not made at the meeting to allow for further discussion, the map and draft ordinance did not go into effect.

In addition, at the Bremerton City Council study session on September 13, 2023, the council members redrafted the ordinance to not call out specific areas but, instead, agreed not to penalize individuals for camping if there is no shelter space available. This ordinance is still in development stages, and we encourage the public to submit comments to the Bremerton City Council or speak at the next council meeting if you would like to provide your input on this matter.

Even though the camping ordinance is part of the city’s approach to addressing homelessness, we acknowledge there is still a homeless crisis in the City of Bremerton due to a shortage of shelter and affordable housing. We will continue to actively work with our service partners, the Mayor, the City Council, and Kitsap County government to help find a solution to the lack of shelter and help ensure Bremerton residents have access to appropriate resources.
